General building authority approval by DIBt

What does building authority approval mean?

The general technical approval (abZ) is issued by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) and regulates the use of fall protection and anchorage devices in Germany that are designed and used for permanent use on buildings. If no abZ (general building authority approval) is available, the respective product can only be used with an individual and time-consuming test by the approval in individual cases (ZiE).

Why are there building authority approvals?

To avoid having to constantly issue approvals in individual cases, a general building authority approval can be applied for from the DIBt for a product. The general building authority approvals guarantee that the product fulfils certain safety-relevant properties and aspects. The abZ is generally valid for 5 years and must then be renewed at the institute.

Why do anchorage devices and fall protection systems require an ABZ?

As the abZ ensures that safety-relevant aspects are adhered to and that fall protection and anchorage devices are not regulated and tested by DIN standards, the so-called conformity mark (also known as the Ü mark) creates a kind of seal of quality for the customer. The Ü mark confirms that the design of the products corresponds to the tested and approved products and can therefore be used without hesitation. Furthermore, there is no need for an expensive decision in individual cases.

Which products against falls from a height require a (DIBt) building authority approval?

Anchor points and lifeline systems currently require building authority approval from the DIBt. For anchor points and lifeline systems, the abZ is intended to ensure that the connection to the mounting surface is stable and guaranteed at all times. This ultimately ensures the safety of the height workers to be protected.

Confirmation of compliance

How is the compliance of the manufactured products with the provisions of the general building inspectorate approvals tested? Two procedures are used here. On the one hand, factory production control is required and, on the other, regular external monitoring including initial testing of the construction products.

As both factory production control and external monitoring record and log the results, consistent production and quality are guaranteed.
