Fall arrest harness

Safety harnesses for occupational safety

Full body harnesses are part of personal fall protection equipment (PPE) and are worn directly on the body. The harnesses are used to keep a person to be secured away from areas where there is a risk of falling via a lanyard, or to catch people in the event of a fall and thus prevent them from hitting the ground. The harnesses are therefore used to prevent people from falling.

Safety harness according to DIN EN 361

DIN EN 361 defines exactly what constitutes a safety harness. It is defined as follows:

“Safety harnesses in accordance with DIN EN 361 are body-holding devices and part of a fall arrest system consisting of webbing straps that enclose the body. When used as intended, a full body harness catches the falling person, transfers the forces to suitable parts of the body and holds the body in an upright position.”

Safety harness service life

Safety harnesses are not made to last forever. Even if a harness is not subjected to any stress during its service life, e.g. as a result of a fall, it will age.

Safety harnesses age due to factors such as dirt, sunlight, incorrect storage or exposure to moisture. Safety harnesses must therefore be inspected regularly. An inspection must be carried out at least once a year and is required by law.

The average service life of a safety harness is approx. 6 years. However, depending on how heavily it has been used, the service life can be considerably shorter.

Safety harness - Who is allowed to test?

The annual inspection is carried out by specially trained experts. These experts are trained to recognize and assess defects and signs of wear and tear. The inspector, who is always in possession of a certificate of competence, issues a so-called inspection logbook for the first inspection, in which the subsequent inspections are also recorded. Inspectors generally react critically to no-name products without corresponding approval/certification, and rightly so! The harness must be able to withstand high forces in an emergency and should therefore be of excellent quality so that it can fulfill its function as fall protection.
