What is a retractable type fall arrester?
A retractable type fall arrester is a type of lanyard. The device is used for fall protection and enables a safe arrest of a free fall with the shortest possible arrest distance. Height safety devices are often also equipped with an integrated energy absorber, which makes it unnecessary to attach an external energy absorber.
How does a retractable type fall arrester work?
The function of a retractable type fall arrester can be compared to that of a car seat belt. Hidden in the housing is a drum on which a strap or rope is rolled up. The integrated strap can be easily pulled out of the housing during normal movements. Only when higher forces act on the belt and the integrated drum unwinds faster (from approx. 1.5 m/sec) do the brake pawls engage. This activates the braking system, which prevents the rope/tape from being unwound any further. The fall is stopped at this moment and the person is caught.
Setting the retractable type fall arrester
Some retractable type fall arresters also allow you to set how far the lanyard can be extended. This is to prevent a fall and the possibility of stepping over the edge of the fall. The fall arrester can therefore also be used as a restraint system and for prevention.
The retraction mechanism also ensures that the rope is always taut and even after retraction, the previously set extension length remains the same. The retractable type fall arrester is always installed on the anchor point side of the building.
