Kernmantle rope

Kernmantle ropes

The kernmantel rope is one of the most important components of personal fall protection equipment. The most primitive form of fall protection can be realised with a kernmantel rope. However, the kernmantel rope is also usually a component of advanced solutions.

It is used, for example, in abseiling and rescue equipment or in various lanyards and fall arresters. The kernmantel rope is therefore an important component of any fall protection system and should therefore be of high quality to ensure the highest possible level of protection.

What material are kernmantel ropes made of?

Kernmantle ropes are usually made of polyamide fibres. In contrast to normal hemp fibre ropes, polyamide ropes are more robust and tear much less frequently. As the name suggests, kernmantle ropes consist of a core and a cover.

The sheath mainly has a protective function. The core, which carries the main load, consists of interwoven fibres that are protected from damage by the cover, and the rope is available in various lengths (m) and diameters (mm).

When should kernmantle ropes be replaced?

It is difficult to give a generalised answer. However, ropes that are used every day and are therefore exposed to a certain amount of stress should be replaced too early rather than too late. Different manufacturers recommend different lengths of use before the rope should be replaced.

Please note that even an externally undamaged rope has a service life and represents a safety risk after a certain period of use.
