Personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) - what is it?

Personal protective equipment serves as safety equipment for various occupational groups and is therefore part of occupational safety. This safety equipment usually consists of several elements that increase safety for the relevant occupational group. A special form of PPE is used to protect people at great heights - so-called PPEgA. This protective equipment against falls from a height (PPE) is explicitly designed for working at great heights and consists of at least one harness (safety harness), which is attached to an anchorage device (e.g. an anchorage point or a rope system) via a lanyard.

Who needs personal protective equipment?

In many professional fields, equipping people with personal protective equipment is indispensable and part of everyday life. Some examples are firefighters, police officers, construction workers or other occupational groups who have to put themselves in danger. For these professions, the use of personal protective equipment obviously increases safety. However, professions such as production workers are also dependent on appropriate equipment or protective clothing, including items such as respiratory masks for respiratory protection or hearing protection. Personal protective equipment is therefore used by far more people than one might initially assume.

What is the difference between the PSA and PSAGA

Personal fall protection equipment (PPE) is explicitly used by people who carry out their inspections and work at great heights, such as on flat or pitched roofs. In general, these people working at heights try to ensure what is known as rope protection. The person is secured by connecting their protective equipment to the anchorage device. These anchorage devices can be elements such as anchor points, roof hooks or lifeline systems. The lanyard is then used to connect the protective equipment to the anchorage device and can thus prevent or arrest a fall.

Accordingly, the PPE not only consists of a rope, but can also be supplemented with components such as energy absorbers, fall arresters and similar extras. In this way, the safety level of workers at height can be successively increased.
