Personal protective equipment against falls from a height (PPE) is used to protect against falls from life-threatening heights. The minimum version of PPE consists of a harness or a safety vest. These are connected to a lifeline system or an anchor point via a lanyard, such as a safety rope, and thus form a fall arrest system.
Who needs personal fall protection equipment?
There are many professions that rely on personal protective equipment when carrying out their work. Firefighters are an obvious example. But production workers in the manufacturing industry also use forms of personal protective equipment. For example, respiratory masks or hearing protection are also part of PPE.
Personal protective equipment against falls from a height (PPE) is mainly required by industrial climbers, roofers or other people who have to carry out work and inspections on flat or pitched roofs. The minimum basic PPE equipment mentioned at the beginning can be supplemented with useful accessories.
How is the PPE used?
In most cases, the PPE is used to implement so-called rope protection. With rope protection, the user is secured via a connection between the PPE and the anchorage device. In this case, anchorage devices can be anchor points, lifeline systems or, on pitched roofs, safety roof hooks. Using a suitable lanyard, the user of the PPE connects their equipment to the permanently installed anchorage devices which, depending on how they are implemented, prevent them from falling or catch them in the event of a fall from a dangerous height.
